AI is Running the Margins

Hi, I’m Lily. I live in the world of distribution where boardroom appointments collide with pallet stacking algorithms, and Q4 prep is when the pressure really shows. Seasonal spikes, labor crunches, and thin margins all converge. Every inefficiency gets magnified: perishable waste eats profits, last mile bleeds cash, and outdated systems collapse under peak demand.
Traditionally, operators fought back with brute force. They added more people at the dock, padded inventory buffers, ran discounting plays to move excess, or leaned on vendor terms to buy time. Those tactics brought relief, but they never fixed the root problems.
Here’s what’s different this year: AI is running core plays. It is driving revenue growth, last-mile optimization, perishable inventory management, and procurement discipline. The stories this week show just how far and fast the shift has gone.
Walmart's perishable supply chain is now 98% automated…and AI is picking the perfect pallet. AI is tackling food waste, real-time routing, and demand prediction down to weather and local events. For the biggest grocer in the U.S., that means fresh shelves, faster turns, and margin protection on every carton.
DP World just released its AI Playbook, Smarter, Safer, Stronger, showcasing how AI is helping solve the thorniest part of logistics: the last mile. Last-mile delivery is costly, unpredictable, and a constant source of customer pain. DP World is applying AI for real-time routing, demand forecasting, and greener delivery strategies, aiming to cut costs while improving service reliability.
Walmart has built high-tech distribution centers in South Carolina, Texas, and California that are 98% automated, and use robots to intake shipments, AI to design the “perfect pallet” and predictive models to balance store supply to slash waste. By folding in external signals like weather and local events, Walmart sharpens demand forecasts and pricing.
Volition launched Power Search, an AI tool that scours the web for industrial components and returns results in seconds. It’s built for technical specs and pulls part numbers, pricing, and lead times across suppliers into one sortable table. Early benchmarks show it cuts search time from hours to under 10 seconds.
GSK is spending $1.2 billion across U.S. sites to expand smart manufacturing capacity. New investments in Maryland and Pennsylvania include AI-enabled operations, digital twins, and real-time data platforms. The goal is to double output and speed product flow through facilities by using AI to make complex production lines more agile and less error-prone.
GrubMarket launched its third AI agent, with this one automating reporting across ERP systems. It delivers charts and insights straight to inboxes, built on a food distribution-specific knowledge graph. This move ensures AI is stitching insights into workflows and putting margin protection on autopilot.
In this episode of Supply Chain Now, EY’s Gaurav Malhotra broke down how agentic AI is moving beyond dashboards and into real warehouse decision-making. The podcast mentions a CPG operator cut monthly exceptions from 14,000 to just 27 using AI. The key? Building guardrails and feeding AI real signals.
Looking at the pattern this week it is crystal clear that AI is closing the gaps that bleed margin.
The lesson is simple. AI doesn’t need perfect data. It needs real workflows. Don’t stop at insight. Wire AI into action. Start where you’re leaking the most: stockouts, search time, exception handling, or freight waste.
This is the quarter when everything gets exposed. AI is the only system that scales fast enough to cover the spread.
