PE's AI Ownership Takes Shape

Across portfolios, PE firms are answering a question that’s been lingering for two years: who’s responsible for AI?

Hi, I’m Lily. I created this PE edition of the AI Dispatch for our growing community of thousands of private equity leaders and portfolio company operators navigating AI implementation.

This week’s theme: AI ownership is getting formalized.

Across portfolios, PE firms are answering a question that’s been lingering for two years: who’s responsible for AI? Permira is appointing Chief AI Officers at portcos and dedicating value creation professionals full-time to AI initiatives. Blackstone’s Cvent and Carlyle’s ManTech are acquiring AI-native capabilities outright. And Bain Capital’s HealthEdge is embedding AI across the entire payer value chain. This week, we show what that looks like in practice.

What GPs Are Whispering About

Permira Appoints Chief AI Officers Across Portcos

Permira has appointed Chief AI Officers at four portfolio companies, Evelyn Partners, Acuity, Westbridge, and Alter Domus, and dedicated three value creation professionals full-time to AI initiatives. The firm reports that its portcos invest two to three times more than peers in tech transformation, with nearly all services companies making deep AI investments on both the cost and revenue side. Permira’s view: AI must be a CEO priority, not an IT function. For PE leaders, AI accountability starts at the top. Read more →

Blackstone’s Cvent Acquires AI Video Platform

Cvent, a Blackstone portfolio company, has acquired Goldcast, an AI-powered video and event content platform for marketers. The deal adds post-event activation capabilities, automatically generating clips, captions, and summaries for multichannel distribution. Goldcast’s founders say AI should help marketers “ideate, edit, package, and distribute content” without specialized skills. For PE operators, the deal signals how AI-native acquisitions can extend a portco’s value chain and unlock new revenue streams. Read more →

Carlyle Portco Acquires AI Leader

ManTech, a Carlyle Group portfolio company, has acquired Elder Research, an AI firm with 30 years serving Fortune 500 and government clients. The acquisition adds a firm where 90% of AI solutions reach production and deliver ROI, versus the industry average of under 20%. The team joins ManTech’s Data and AI Practice under a Chief Data and AI Officer, a title showing up more frequently across portfolios. For those driving transformation in your portcos, the deal shows how specialized AI talent is a strategic asset worth acquiring, not just hiring. Read more →

Portfolio Gold

Every week, we’ll bring you a new, real-world example of how targeted AI deployments within portfolios are solving persistent business challenges.

HealthEdge Embeds AI Across the Claims Lifecycle

Company: HealthEdge (Bain Capital portco), a healthcare payer technology platform covering 110+ million lives across 48 states.

Problem: Health plans face rising administrative costs and increasingly complex regulations, all while relying on legacy systems that can’t keep up. Claims processing remains manual and fragmented, with reviewers navigating dozens of tabs to understand a single claim. Payment integrity is reactive: errors are caught after claims are paid, leading to costly recoveries. Meanwhile, health plans juggle multiple vendors, increasing overhead and reducing transparency into root causes.

Solution: HealthEdge is embedding AI across claims, payment integrity, care management, and member engagement. An AI Claims Summarizer consolidates claim details into a single view; a Codoxo partnership enables GenAI-powered pre-pay error detection; automated clinical summaries accelerate care decisions; and AI-driven provider data management eliminates manual reconciliation. Following Bain Capital’s merger with UST HealthProof, the combined company is building an end-to-end AI-native operating system, with an Agentic AI platform in development to automate manual work across the entire health plan.

Results:

  • 115+ health plans now on a unified, AI-enabled platform

  • Pre-pay payment integrity reduces costly post-payment recoveries

  • Consolidated vendor footprint lowers administrative overhead

  • Claims reviewers access the full claim lifecycle in a single view, accelerating adjudication

Why This Worked: HealthEdge moved AI upstream to catch errors before payment, not after. Through strategic partnerships and M&A, Bain Capital built a unified platform, reducing vendor sprawl and setting the stage for autonomous operations.

Lily’s Recommendation Corner

Private Equity’s Not-quite Return to Normality, Discussion with Seth Boro

In this episode of The Big View, Seth Boro, Thoma Bravo Managing Partner, shares how the firm is navigating AI’s impact. Discover how incumbents will be the big winners, especially in enterprise, where customer relationships, trust, and workflow expertise are hard to replicate. “Sure, maybe it’s easier to build an app with co-pilot tools,” Boro says, “but then you’ve got to build a business to support Fortune 500 companies.” That’s where startups struggle. Every Thoma Bravo portfolio company now has a generative AI strategy, and the firm avoids workflows it sees as susceptible to disruption. Boro frames AI as another cycle to navigate, not a paradigm shift: “Great leaders figure these elements out. AI is just another piece of the business to now manage.” Listen here →

Lily’s Closing Thoughts

The through line this week is accountability. Permira is naming Chief AI Officers. ManTech is acquiring AI talent with a 90% production rate. HealthEdge is building AI into every stage of claims processing. What sets these apart isn’t the technology; it’s that someone owns it.
